The high incidence of breast cancer in women is a topic that worries society nowadays
The importance on preventing and detecting at an early stage this disease has generated a social awareness regarding the periodic mammographic control in women from a certain age.
Advances in early diagnosis techniques, a fast and accurate diagnosis, as well as various developments in the treatment of this disease have led to an exponential increase in breast cancer survival. At Marti-Torres Clinic we want to offer women the highest quality and speed in the diagnosis and follow-up of all breast diseases.
With our new 3D Mammography equipment with Hologic Selenia Dimensions 3D Tomosynthesis we offer the latest technology for the diagnosis of breast diseases to the patient.
The medical staff in this department is characterized for their extensive professional experience, as well as their closeness and human warmth. All the performed tests are to be notified by specialist doctors, who, in the case of positive findings, guide the patient according to the type of the found pathology.
Explorations for the complete diagnosis of the breast
3D Mammography with Tomosynthesis (DBT)
This is the main diagnostic test for an early detection of breast cancer. It is performed on both breasts. All mammograms are technically validated immediately by a radiologist, who can request a complementary ultrasound if necessary.
This test is based on imaging through the use of ultrasound, which is harmless to the patient. Usually, women take a breast ultrasound when palpation is positive or complementary to a mammography.
MRI of the breast
This test is based on the capture of images by using a magnetic field. Breast resonance can be performed without or with contrast, depending on the objective of the study. The used contrast is gadolinium. It is indeed important to know that the breast resonance does not replace the mammography, which still remains the main diagnostic test for detection of breast cancer.
Magnetic Resonance of breasts without contrast.
It is usually done to assess the integrity of breast prostheses.
Magnetic resonance of breasts with contrast.
This test is usually performed on high-risk patients who are either already diagnosed (and done as a cancer extension study) or patients with dense breast, whose diagnosis is difficult to be determined by mammography. Undertaking this test requires 4 hours of fasting. In premenopausal patients the test should be performed between days 10 and 16 of the menstrual cycle.
Core needle biopsy guided by ultrasound
This test is always done under medical criterion, after performing a mammogram and a breast ultrasound. Having found a suspicious lesion requires the extraction of a sample for a later analysis in the laboratory. This test requires 4 hours of fasting.
Core needle biopsy guided by stereotaxy
This test requires the removal of a tissue sample from a lesion by using the mammographic technique. There are lesions that due to their characteristics cannot be evaluated by ultrasound and it is necessary to use X-rays for their correct detection and biopsy. The extracted sample is taken to a laboratory for analysis. The patient must come with 4 hours of fasting.
Fine needle aspiration biopsy guided by ultrasound
This test involves the extraction of liquid by the use of a fine needle, usually taken from cystic lesions. The samples are taken to a laboratory for analysis. This test requires 4 hours of fasting.
There are different techniques that the radiologist can follow to mark a non-palpable lesion for a subsequent surgical removal. This is a coordinated study together with the surgeon, who usually contacts the radiologist to schedule the test. Carbon marking and harpoon marking are two techniques we use, among others. In order to perform this test, the patient must follow the instructions of their surgeon.
Is there any special indication that I should consider before performing a mammogram?
It is recommended not to use creams or deodorants before the test in order to avoid alterations in the image. The patient will always have to provide previous mammograms or ultrasound when they are coming from another center.
At what time of the cycle should I have my mammogram?
For an asymptomatic periodic review we recommend performing the test in the first days of the cycle, since the breast is less dense and less painful.
Since what age and how often do I have to take mammograms?
Your gynecological doctor is the person who should assess you on this matter, according to your individual case. However, the benefit of being able to detect a malignant lesion is greater than the risks assumed by radiation exposure.
Can I take a mammogram without a prescription?
In our center we always recommend that patients go to their periodic check-ups with their gynecologist, who will determine the need of taking the test. However, any woman can have a mammogram without a prescription by signing an express consent, which will be validated by our medical specialists.
Does the recommendation of a biopsy indicate the presence of cancer?
No. Breast lesion biopsies are performed when the results cannot be determined by image and an histological confirmation is necessary. In many cases, this confirmation is of benignity and not of cancer.Pedir Cita
